Rhodes Island, the basics

Rhodes Island, the basics

The Island is suitable for families, couples and solo travelers ( yes, it is safe for women to travel alone here!!!) In all the years I've been visiting I have not once experienced any violence or theft. (Do use common sense, do not leave your bag unattended etc.)

English is spoken almost everywhere, sometimes also some German.

There is public transportation to almost anywhere on the Island, however a bit time-consuming. Yet if you want to really see a lot of the Island, it is advisable to rent a car. Busses can be a bit unpredictable, considering that in the high season (july and August) busses can be so full you'll have to wait for another one, and sometimes even for 3 other ones to drive by packed full 🙃. Prices for public transportation are affordable, and when you buy your tickets in the minimarkets they are even cheaper.

Taxis have fixed prices all over the Island. So no worries there. If you want to use one upon arrival on Diagoras Airport there will be taxis waiting right outside. However in the high season, you might need to wait a little longer if you have not made any prior arrangements.

The Island is divadeble in 2 half's. On the side where you arrive by plane) there are pebbled beaches and there will always be some wind here. This makes it feel a little less hot in the summer Temperatures above 35°C are normal in july and August. The "other side" of the Island has the sandy beaches, yet less wind in summer, making it feel hotter.

Make sure you have comfortable sandals or shoes for walking around. Also the beaches can become extremely hot underneath your feet, so flip-flops or water shoes can come in handy. There are beautiful, durable and very comfortable handmade ones available on the Island, in case you want to support local crafts people.

Cash is still the preferred payment method. Yet you can pay by card almost anywhere.

Tapwater is drinkable, no worries about getting sick ( I tried😁). However I prefer to follow the Greeks and buy myself bottled water.

Toiletpaper go's in the bin, not the toilet. The sewage system is simply not adapted to the enormous amount of people flushing the paper.

Greek people take a lot of care in their appearance. So when you go out for lunch/dinner, dressing well is highly appreciated.

The food is absolutely delicious and very affordable, so no need to stick around in the hotel, go out and enjoy the heavenly cuisine. Their local fruits, vegetables, bread, pastries, meat and cheeses are a treat for your taste buds. And yes, there is lots of food for vegetarians to (I know because I am one🥰) Greeks love Mezes, many small dishes ordered for the whole table to be shared. I highly recommend giving it a try, it gives such a lovely vibe💖

Going for a coffee is a serious thing. People take their time for this and can take up the whole morning or afternoon.

During the months of mei up until half/end oktober, most places/shops will be open 7 days a week.

A smile and a greeting when you pass locals sitting outside, especially in Greek (for they know the language is very difficult to learn), is also highly appreciated. So try greetings as: kalimera (good day) or simply: ya sas (formal greeting for one person or multiple people at the same time).

A little side note, there are some people using their children for begging. Please don't encourage this. They are not locals and is not good for the children. Also there can be "sellers" wanting to put bracelets on you, pretending to gift it, for then to get your money. These are not local people either and should not be encouraged.

So, for now this is it again. May it inspire you to visit and explore!!! More wi be coming in my next article 🥰💝
